My grandfather served in the Royal Field Artillery as a driver during WW1, perhaps in Africa, Palestine or Gallipoli, I am not sure which at this point, as a search for his army records has only produced the Medal Card showing that he served with the RFA. However, my question is this: As a driver for the Royal Field Artillery, is it possible that he would he have been 'seconded' to this unit from the RASC? Any shedding of light on this would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hi Tom I forgot to say, he would not necessary to have been seconded to the RFA from the ASC but possible. Most units had many drivers there own. Brian Hi Tom The RASC only came into being after the first world war. It was known as ASC then after the first world war it was awarded the Royal. Here is a link that you might find of interest. I tend to doubt if a driver in the RFA came from the ASC. So far as my knowledge goes a gun team driver was a member of the RFA and was ranked as Gunner. You could try and confirm this, perhaps, through the Royal Artillery museum.

Thanks for the guidance on this matter - I can draw a line through this particular field of enquiry and further my search elsewhere. Best wishes to all.
