Hello
After searching for ages, i found out last night that my dad belonged to the Royal Army Service Corps, ( i was told 'badged' = i dont know what that means). apparently he was previously in the 51st highland fusieliers-- which seems strange cos he is from nottingham I can remember him telling me he was in alexandria and suez during the war and i could swear he said panama canal as well.
could anyone tell me please. does this add up, were the rasc in these places? would be really grateful for any help
many thanks

Hello there... I've just started researching my father's service in the RASC in North Africa from 1943 onwards... He served in Alexandria (and Mersa Matru) in the 14 B.S.D. - His name was John Beat. I am just about to send off for my father's service record - see this web page - and I suggest you try likewise, as it mat shed light on where exactly he served and in what unit... You never know, they may have known each other!

I would not be surprised at anyone being in any regiment during WW2. I fear that confusion has arisen over years as to exactly where your father served and in what. Let us start with saying that it is highly unlikely that he served on the Panama Canal. To the best of my knowledge no British Army unit has ever served there. Second point is that there was a formation "51st Highland Division" and I suggest that he might have served in that. There has never, to my knowledge, been a regiment "Highland Fusiliers". So a man from Nottingham, in the RASC, could well have served in 51st Highland Division in some way. No problem about being in Alexandria or Suez in some capacity or other.

Paula, I hope you return to read this reply. My father was in Alexandria for about four years, 1942 to 1945. He was in RASC / EFI that is Expeditionary Forces Institutes. in other words NAAFI . Do you know the name of the ship which your relative went out on?

My father was also in the RASC during the war. He was stationed in North Africa with the 8th Army. He travelled out on the Queen Mary out of Gourock, Scotland on 29th June 1940 and arrived in Cairo during August 1940. He spent about 2 years in Cairo and was a driver for an American Colonel and also drove Monty at some point. He was also involved at El Alamein, Monte Cassino and then returned to England in late 1943 where he trained as a DUKW driver and landed his troops on Sword beach on DDay. His name was Private Philip Morgan from South Wales and if anyone has any more info I would love to hear. I have applied for his service record and have been researching his journey out on the Queen Mary.

With reference to the original post above, It is most likely that he was on the Suez Canal. The port at Suez was called Port Tewfik during WWII. If he ever went to Sydney or Australia for any reason, It is just possible, particularly if it was an American troop ship, that it took the route through the Panama Canal back into the Atlantic Ocean.
