My late father, Thomas Gavin Carruthers, served in the RASC during WW11.I have some details which I found in some old paperwork. It reads 171 Coy R.A.S.C., 11th Armoured Div,29th Armoured Brigade.Landed Juno Beach beach D Day plus 1. Drove C.O's car on liberating Belsen.I dont have hisservice number.A relative has said he finished a sergeant and was mentioned in despatches., Have tried Forces War Records and according to them he doesn't exist! He was born in West Lothian Scotland. Any suggestions?

calder His service records are held by the MoD - you can get a copy of them but it will cost £30. You will either need his serive number of birth date and you will need to provide a copy of his death certificate. www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-recordsIt takes a month or so to get them posted to you. This should confirm when he served with the unit above and who he was with before or after. You can then either visit the National Archives, or find a researcher to do so, to see look up the unit war diary to see where his unit served and what he may have done. Good luck. Colin
