Anyone remember Houndstone camp near Yeovil. I was posted there in 1965 ? to train as Staff Clerk though I had done my basic training with the RAOC. Great time at Yeovil with some first class men and a very pretty young female second lieutenant who had done her degree in zoology so was ideally suited to joining us. I remember lemon tops and orange tops as favourite tipple at local (cider - scrumpy with dash of lemonade or orangeade to give it taste). Great time there but Army Records totally confused when I finished as had no idea what an RAOC Staff Clerk was. I was posted to Bicester as a Tech Clerk and did a B2 course to keep the guys happy. Then they tried to make me go for a commission but being as thick as two short planks that was never going to happen so Army Records came up trumps again and posted me to Sandhurst as a Staff Clerk. But Yeovil was one of best places for me as I was able to hitch a lift home every weekend in just under an hour.

Hi Houndstone Harrier , I did my last bit of training there FEB.57 PROMOTED AFTER PASSING OUT.Became a platoon n.c.o. permanent staff.Later was transferred over the road to Lufton on driver training.Left May 58 on posting to a field hygene section at medics training depot Keogh Barracks Ash Vale as 2/ic transport. Enjoyed my time at Yeovil.Had some probs with the local lads on a Saturday night at the dance hall.Funilly enough I met a girl named Janice, her last name was Mountain,i dont suppose it would be the same girl.WE broke up after a few months. Fun times Yours Ron B

I did my clerical training at Houndstone in May 1965. Met up with some male veterans this Year who told me that if you were caught peeking into the WRAC camp you got your eyebrows shaved. Is this true?

I did my RASC clerk course there in 1962 into the cold weather of 1963. I stayed on to do a sixteen week shorthand and typing course into the spring of 1963. Only about six or eight of us on the course including three WRAC girls. We had a great time. I did duties as Town Patrol in a jeep stopping at all the pubs! From there I ent on to BAOR Headquarters at Reindahlen which I enjoyed also. I have forgotten most of my shorthand, but my army taught touch typing stays with, and benefits me even today. I used to go home to Portsmouth most weekends via the steam train from Yeovil Junction to Yeovil Town to pick up the mainline steam trains from the West Country.
