My grandfather, George Norris, was in the Army Service Corps from December 1914 to January 1919. He was at Woolwich initially, but went to France May 1916 (do not know when he returned). His rank was driver, number T4/035917, which I understand means he was a driver of horses. I would like to know more about where he was in France, and would be willing to visit Kew, but I understand I really need a battalion number, or more details before doing so. The records I have are downloaded from Ancestry. I did not know until last year he had been in the WW1 when I obtained a copy of my father's full birth certificate, where it gave his father's occupation. Any help or information would be appreciated. Sandra Taylor

Assuming you have access to ancestry, have you searched for his service record or WW 1 pension record? You should be able to search for this with a date of birth and /or regimental number, then view a few pages further on to find an address where he lived that you may recognise. I believe you can also search the National Archives for the same information but it is pay to download. Please note that not all records survive.

Thanks for the info. I have the medal roll and his service records from Ancestry. What I do not have is a battalion number, which is something I need, to find out more. The ASC was a huge organisation, and I am told he could have been sent anywhere.
I have written to the RASC Museum to see if they can help.
Thanks again.
