I have been looking into what my grandfather John Thomas Trim did in WW1. I have managed to decipher his medal card & discovered that he was in Gallipoli. His Regtl No was 15363 & 303629, he was in the Rasc then transferred to the Labour corps. His date of entry was 28.9.1915. Is there any way of finding out a bit more about what he actually did. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Shirley Wills

Your best bet is to find a library that has internet access and a subscription to "Ancestry", you can research there free. You should be able to search free at your county records office as well. To search for his service record put the names and the army number in the relevant boxes, press enter and see if you get a result, you may have to search several names, please bear in mind that not all records survive as some were destroyed on the war. His service record should tell you the dates and which theatre of war he was posted to. I would also search the Army pensions records at the same places (library or County records offices) as these will tell you if he was pensioned out of the Army through injury or ill health, assuming you don't know already. If you know which company he served in you may be able to find the unit war diary, this will give more detailed information about unit movements. Try www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/They have some good research guides and you can search free, pay to download, which might give you an idea if any record survives. Hope this helps, send me a PM if you need further info.

Thanks very much for the info. I am already a member on ancestry which is where I got his mic. I think I'm unlucky on the service record & pension record front, absolutely nothing. So, how difficult is it to find his unit war diary when I don't even know what he did in the Rasc? Your advice would be very welcome, Shirley
