I would like to announce the formation of a brand new branch of the RASC & RCT Association, but it is a branch with a difference.
On the 30th March 2013 I was part of a team who organised a parade to mark the closing down of Buller Barracks, (details and pictures plus videos can be found on links at the end of this post)
It was hard to organise due to there being some resistance from the powers that be but in the end it was agreed that we could hold our parade, the turn out although reasonable at 320 could have been much higher had we been able to spend more time organising the event itself and publicising it but that is by the by.
One of the things that became blatantly obvious in our organising the event was the fact that so many ex corps man were not members of any branches and due to administrative errors there are no records of many soldiers ever joining the association. The main reason behind so many not being in and branches is due to either them not knowing about them or where to find them, or due to the fact they don't have a branch local to them, this is where we got the idea of forming our branch.
So now we come to why we are a branch with a difference, we are called "the Buller Branch" and we are an on line only branch, in other words we don't have a physical base, this means that no matter where you are in the world you can be a member and gain all the benefits of branch membership apart from our meetings aren't in a real place, we are made up from 3 main parts, firstly we have our Facebook page, this is used to recruit members although they can join us directly through our second part, our Web site, this details all activities, membership application form and useful links including all branch locations around the UK. Our third part is a forum not unlike this, but some parts are for branch members only, this is because we want to encourage membership rather than having casual visitors so that people get involved in what we want to achieve, that being to organise events around the UK or the world if there is interest in so doing, we provide the forum for any of our members to get together and arrange meet ups where ever they want to hold them, be that in the UK or say Germany. We have only been running for a little over a month and have so far gathered together 47 members and have been represented at two functions relating to the Corps, the RLC Open Day at Deepcut and the Corps Weekend at Aldershot, we intend putting ourselves out there as much as we can and this may be by using local members of our branch at some events and then a "national team" for the bigger events.
We are on a learning curve, but with the support of the Association we have confidence that we will make a success of the branch.
You can find us on Facebook HERE.
Our web site is HERE.
And finally our forum is HERE. Please bear in mind you will only have limited access to this forum until you become a member of our branch.
We have a Flickr account with many photos from the Parade HERE.
Also we have some Video footage from the parade including the Corps band HERE.
